Adding Pine Furniture In The Home

pine furnitureWhen I think about interior decorating for our own house, I have to weigh all of the options that are out there, as well as the opinion of my partner, who would like a rustic atmosphere. When I think “rustic”, I think pine furniture and horseshoe coat racks and such with a neutral, two-tone brown paint design.

I have to admit, out of all of the choices out there, I like the log furniture options! Yes, it is generally more expensive (unless you make it yourself), but there is just something that lifts my heart when I think about pine furniture for my house!

Wooden furniture made out of tree out of our own pasture, hardwood floors for the main part of our house, neutral paint colors, horseshoe coat racks and bone handles for my kitchen drawers are all on my wish list for this Summer! I think we will start with a wooden bed frame for our bedroom with complementary wooden desk bedroom furniture, and then maybe a bench or something by the front door to take boots off on, and then maybe a kitchen table or something.

Overall, I think the wooden-type furniture is going to be the easiest to keep clean and such. Ceramic tiles and such are easy to clean, but then you have to worry about the grout and such, and I am just not ready to deal with that. There is also the metal option for furniture, but that makes the furniture seem cold and unusable, in my opinion, especially metal bedroom furniture. Also, metal tends to rust after a while. On the other hand, if it’s termite/bug free to start with, if you keep your wood furniture clean and finished with linseed oil, or even a clear varnish, wood furniture will last for a long time with very little upkeep, except a coat of varnish or linseed oil occasionally.

Getting Your Brand New Pine Bedroom Furniture To Your Bedroom

pine_bedroom2Did you just buy some brand new pine bedroom furniture? Now that the exhilaration of shopping is fading, it is time to consider how to get it from the furniture store to your bedroom in one piece. Some people will just say, “Pay the furniture shop to transport the new furniture.” But is it really so simple?

Unfortunately, real life is rarely so simple. The biggest problem is co-ordination. How do you get rid of your old bed and other furniture just in time to install your new pine bedroom furniture? In general, you cannot just rip out all your old stuff and toss it away immediately. Where are you going to sleep in the meantime, and where are you going to keep your stuff? If you are a fit and athletic 20 year old, you might be able to handle sleeping on the floor a few nights. But if you are past your prime, and spend most of your day in front of a desk, that is a sure recipe for a backache.

But you also cannot just wait until the day the mover sends your new furniture over. Will you really be able to remove all your old furniture before the furniture van gets to your home? Especially if the mover calls you up 60 minutes before he leaves the warehouse? In addition to that, what will you do with your old furniture? Will the furniture shop take it away? Will you sell it to the junk yard? Will you arrange with you town council or municipal garbage collector to dispose of it? Or do you intend to get rid of it in a garage sale?

This sort of co-ordination is a real pain. It is bad enough if your current bedroom furniture was bought flat-pack. But what if you have fitted bedroom furniture? Who will rip out the old wardrobe for you? And how about your bed? Does it need any special handling to be safely removed from where it is resting right now?

These are all questions you need to ask yourself. In theory, the furniture shop where you bought your new furniture should be able to advice you. The problem is that the guy handling your purchase is the salesman while the guy handling the delivery of your furniture IS NOT! Does the shop have a standard operation procedure (SOP)? Does its SOP cater to your situation? If not, can you pay extra to get things done right? After all, you really, really, do not want to remove your old bed and rip out your old wardrobe only to learn that the delivery man will be late by a day … or a week.

If you have not already bought your new pine furniture, this is a good reason to go to a small, local shop with an experienced owner. It helps to be able to talk things over with the boss of the shop. You may have to pay 10% or 20% more than buying from a larger retailer, but it can be worth it to get things done smoothly. You should really think about it – how much is it worth to you to have someone else handle most of this headache?

It can be fun to just go out and buy some brand new furniture for your bedroom. Getting a new vanity or storage chest delivered and assembled is no big deal. But getting rid of all your old bedroom furniture and replacing it with a brand new bedroom furniture collection is an altogether different exercise in complexity.
