A Lamp Shade Doesn’t Have to Be Boring

color lamp shadeMost of the lampshades we see in shops these days are the standard white, boring variety. However, there are some valid reasons why they are that way.  First of all, the standard light colored neutral shades tend to be practical and fit in quite nicely with any home decor, even if they are somewhat bland. The other reason is that the light shines through better.

However, a lampshade doesn’t have to be boring.  If you want to get creative, look at a replacement lampshade that will add some color or maybe even a little personality to the room you want to update or upgrade.  After all, how many times do you move your furniture around in a room, just for a different look? Many of us paint our walls every three to five years to add a fresh look to a room and to upgrade the room to some more modern colors. But you will be amazed at the difference a brightly colored lampshade can make. Why spend the time, money and energy upgrading your whole room, when a few well-placed colorful accessories will do the trick and give your room a whole new lease of life?

If you are looking for the right lampshade, the choices are almost limitless. There are lampshades everywhere. You can shop online for days looking at all the options.

There are lampshades that come in patterns to match a theme in your room, or just brightly colored ones. You can see some really brightly colored ones on the website Recycle Delight.

Personally, I think that colored shades (especially the pastel colored shades) are really adaptable.  If you don’t want to go too wild with a new lampshade, still keep the light colors but want an upgrade, some of the pastels are really peaceful and can be very relaxing.  Even though lampshades are a small piece of the room decor, just a pastel color with the light shining through at night provides a comforting ambiance, particularly with a lower wattage bulb  The little hint of color in a corner can also be an attention grabber.

Whichever way you go, there are always many lampshades to pick from, ranging from cheap ones you can pick up second-hand for a few dollars at a thrift store, right up to mega-expensive designer models. So if you haven’t thought of a replacement lampshade or a lampshade in the past, you may want to start investigating now.  They can really make an impact to any room.

The Versatile Modern Swag Lamps

swag lampsOnce a standard way to provide lighting in living rooms, swag lamps have remained functional while gaining some style. Sometimes called a hanging lamp, the definition of a swag is much broader than it was in the 1950s. Many contemporary chandeliers are equipped with the distinctive chain and cord found on most swag-style lamps.
Hanging lights are especially appropriate for rooms with tight floor space; they are often found in small apartments because of their space-saving qualities. Swags are also good where concentrated light is needed. They can provide cool, energy-efficient direct light over an accent table, behind a favorite reading chair, or in a breakfast nook. They are usually height-adjustable in order to fit high ceilings, with the added benefit of adjusting or diffusing the desired amount of light. Another plus for swag lighting is that it is not hard-wired into the ceiling; just insert the plug into an existing outlet.
An old swag — like the dusty one Grandma had in the corner of the living room — can be updated for a clean “retro” look, with new paint and lamp shades, as long as the wiring and plug are in good condition. If the wiring needs to be replaced, the swag can be retrofitted with newer wiring and lamp holders.

While there are many advantages to considering a swag lamp, they do have some drawbacks. The first is the cord. If there are small children around, or pets who like to chew, a hard-wired, ceiling-mounted light might be a better choice. Any repair or change to the lamp — changing bulbs, installing replacement ceiling hooks or lampshades, chain adjustments — requires a ladder; often, a pair of pliers and a second set of hands are needed as well.

Swag lamps and lampshades come in all price ranges and can be purchased at most lighting showrooms and big-box home improvement stores, online lighting dealers, auction sites and thrift stores.

Shopping for Drum Shades on a Budget

drum-shade-pendantWhen you are looking for stylish new lampshades for your modern home and have a strict budget to keep to, there is one type of lamp shade that is sure to provide a solution. Drum shades are usually available quite cheaply in discount stores and you will probably be able to find them in a number of different sizes and colors to suit your requirements. Drum lamp shades are often cheaper than other shades because they are so simple to manufacture. (A cylindrical drum shape is easier to make than other shapes such as a pagoda).

If you are not quite satisfied with the plain shades you find in the discount stores there are a few other places you can look for low cost shades.

1. Sales

You will often find lamp shades are discounted at sale time by big department stores and you can make a big saving especially if you are looking for more than one shade.

2. Ends of Lines

You can get good deals even in designer stores if you choose lamp shades that are about to be discontinued. There is no harm in buying these if you are not planning on getting a whole set of coordinated items.

3. Auction Sites

You can get some good prices for lamp shades on places like eBay where vendors offer items just a little cheaper than in regular stores. Do take care that the vendor has a good reputation and that the shipping costs are reasonable (meaning that they don’t turn a good deal into an expensive purchase).

4. Online Lighting Stores

The online lighting stores sell a range of items from very cheap to very expensive but they usually compare favorably at each level with full priced merchandise from local stores so it is well worth looking to see if you can get exactly what you want. Sometimes you can get something just a little bit unusual online which you cannot get locally and that in itself can make shopping online worthwhile.
