Electric Garage Heaters: A Simple and Effective Tool to Heating Your Garage

I’m not going to lie, I enjoy my garage. It’s more than a place to store my car in my eyes. It’s more of a sanctuary for me to get away from the house, bills, kids, and all of the other things that can be distracting in the house. I get to let my hair down (or the little I have left) and just relax and tinker with my tools or watch sports on my little TV. I absolutely love it.

But there is one downside to your garage being your personal sanctuary. It gets incredibly cold during the winter months. I mean really, really cold. During the summer time, the garage is one of the best places to be. It’s usually the coolest room in the house, so I can’t wait to get home and chill out there, instead of using my air conditioning and increasing my electricity bill. But, it’s a double edge sword, because it’s even colder in the garage than the rest of the house during the winter months.

Why? Well, after doing some research, a garage lacks much of the insulation that the other rooms in your house have. And it makes sense of you think about it. Why would the house builder waste extra money insulating the garage to the same standards as the rest of the house. There’s no reason to. The only thing most people use their garage for is to park their cars and storage. So they’re able to save money on construction costs, and make more money for each home sold.

But that doesn’t suit people like you and me who see their garage as another livable space. So, I had a choice of not using my garage during the winter months, or figuring out a way to make it happen. Here’s a quick breakdown of my process.

First, if you’re considering of extending your central heating and air to the garage I have one word of advice… Don’t do it! It’s incredibly expensive, takes a while for the project to be completed, and your contractor absolutely needs to know what they’re doing because big problems can occur if it’s not done properly, which will cost you even more money to fix. If you still decide to go down this route, make sure you upgrade your insulation in your garage so the room retains the heat and air when you turn it on.

But there is an affordable option you can take advantage of right now; portable garage heaters. Electric garage heaters to be specific. They are affordable and come a wide range of output capacities, so you’re guaranteed to find one that is powerful enough to heat your garage during the winter months.

But there are a few things you need to be aware. From personal experience, electric garage heaters can increase your electricity bill substantially if you don’t pay attention to how long it’s on. Since it is powered by your homes electricity, it can affect your electricity bill directly. And since it takes a lot of electricity to power your garage heater, you can end up spending a lot of money if you accidentally leave it on when you aren’t using your garage. There are other garage heating option on the market, but electric heaters are the best in my opinion. They run clean, are efficient, and if push comes to shove, you can use it to heat your home to if your central heat and air breaks.
