How To Pick A Pocket Knife For Beginners

pocket knifeAt some point, most boys and a few men will consider buying a pocket knife. Pocket knives are one of those tools for boys that means they’re becoming a man. Well, I take that back, it used to mean that! It’s still true for many males though. In my day, most of the boys I knew couldn’t wait until they received their first pocket knife. Generally, it would be a Christmas present or birthday present. And it was always shown off at school the next day! Try doing that in today’s society!

If you’re in the market to purchase your first pocket knife, here are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind.

First, find a place that carries a good selection of pocket knives. The big box stores like Wal-Mart is not the place to try and find a pocket knife. Either look at specialty stores in the Mall or try sporting goods stores or hardware stores in your area. The better ones will carry several different brands and sizes.

Next consider the size of the knife. You don’t want one that is so bulky that it’s a pain to carry, because then you’ll stop carrying it! A pocket knife with an overall length of 2.75 to 4 inches is about right. I prefer knives of about 3 inches myself. Also, don’t go for the dinky things either! Be a man and get a good knife buddy!

Next is the number of blades the knife will have. For a first pocket knife, I would not recommend one of the single blade folders with a pocket clip. Besides, these are really pocket knives! I like two or three blades on my pocket knives. Currently I carry a Case Saddlehorn pocket knife. It has two blades. One is a clip blade and the other is a skinner blade. These two blades are perfect for my needs.

The best overall pocket knife for many folks is the good ole Stockman. It generally has 3 blades of different sizes and will serve you well.
