Why buy a pole hedge trimmer?

First of all, for those of you who are worried about exhaust fumes from a petrol pole hedge trimmer, especially as you will be using it to reach above your head, don’t be concerned about this. The fumes will be carried safely away from your face as the engine is located well away from where you hold the pole.

A petrol pole hedge trimmer, although heavier than an electric cordless one does have several advantages.

Firstly, it is more powerful.  It is very frustrating to be using a model that is underpowered for the job and have to resort to getting out a set of manual pole loppers to get those twigs that the cordless model just isn’t up to – you will have no such problems with a petrol model.  If your cordless model runs low on battery, you are stuck – the petrol model just needs refueling (after a short wait for the engine to cool down, of course).

Secondly, you very much get what you pay for, buying a cheap, badly balanced model will just put more strain on your back neck and shoulders trying to compensate for the unwieldiness of the machine you are using.  It is not always a lighter model that is less tiring to use.

When you go to buy a pole hedge-trimmer check out a few models and don’t make the mistake of just looking at the attachments to see if they are right for the job.  You actually need to get the machine in your hands and hold it in the way you would be using it in your garden, move it around, make some sweeps with it, does it feel comfortable, well balanced or does it feel cumbersome and unwieldy?  Find out before you part with your dollars!  A well-balanced machine is safer to use too, there is less likelihood of you over-reaching which could be a major problem if you are working above your head.

Once you have bought your pole hedge trimmer though and have taken care to get the right one for your requirements, I can guarantee that you will not go back to using a step ladder or an extension ladder.

Finally, whatever you do, don’t forget to wear the right eye protection when using your pole hedge trimmer and, if you are using a petrol hedge trimmer, wear ear defenders as well.
